Winter Life Around the Lake

Wildlife Persists, Even in Winter

Even in the harshest of weather and frozen waters, Utah Lake still teams with life. Birds fill the air and the water, seeking refuge and food. Along the shoreline, deer and rabbits graze on snow covered grass. Foxes and coyotes watch visitors from afar. Winter is the time of year many people stay inside, or go to the mountains to ski. Most people don't think to visit a body of water in the winter. But it is the perfect time of year. Many animals come out of hiding because there are less people to be afraid of.

One of the things I love the most about this time of year is the fewer people means there is almost more life than in the summer. Birds and animals can be seen throughout the landscape, looking for food and shelter, riding the breeze and smelling the air. Even when it the air is bitter, there are usually flocks of birds in the trees and the shore. Constantly full of life, almost the opposite of how many people view the lake.

A Place of Wonder

Utah Lake has suffered with a bad image for decades. Many people see it as stinky, poisonous and dead. Despite almost being drained dry in the early 1900s, being a dumping ground the local sewage, and full of invasive plants and fish, the lake has overcome it's challenges and thrived. Many people have spent their lives studying the lake, removing invasive species and restoring the shorelines. The lake has overcome many challenges but is beautiful and thriving. Winter is a perfect time to visit and to see the changes.
